Aerial vs. Buried FTTH Access
A mega valued reader send me these pictures from one of EU eastern capitals. These pictures illustrate aerial deployments of FTTH/B access networks. You can also see the feeder cables climbing on the rooftop of few buildings.
Economic case certainly benefits from the FTTH/B costs cuts of aerial installation, however, it has a negative impact on the natural landscape and on citizens quality of living. Many contractors and telcos favor aerial fiber arguing that “it greatly reduces deployment costs”. Well, even so, are actually these savings in the last few meters the tipping point to FTTH business case? Would you be willing to save some euros and see this view every day you open your window?
I do not think many architects are willing to let for such an aerial deployment to be allowed.
Aerial deployment may save some euros to bring fiber to the home, but also will affect both your living quality and even the value of the property where it is deployed.
