100Gbs over a Single Wavelength
One of the most exciting news in September’s European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC) 2008 was probably the presentation of a field trial by Verizon and Nokia Siemens Networks that transmitted 100Gbps for over 1,040Km simultaneously with 10Gbps and 40Gbps signals on the same system. This is a world record for 100Gbps optical transmission following previous trials conducted by Verizon and Alcatel-Lucent last fall which achieved 100Gbps transmission over 500+ Km.
A key result of this experiment is that no network change and/or redesign, except from end-points equipment, is required to upgrade network transmission capabilities to 100Gbps.
